Eaton’s Vehicle Technology Development Group is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer- Power Electronics Enclosures to join our team. The role can be located in Southfield, MI, Marshall, MI, Galesburg, MI or Tualatin, OR. Relocation is available to applicants who are open to relocating to Southfield, MI. 

 

Position Overview:

In this role, you will join the New Spaces team and develop products that will be the future of Eaton.  You will be a member of a high-performance team faced with new challenges every day.  As a member of this team, you will lead the technical development of vehicle grade connection systems.  Along with the technical challenge, you will support business development and have frequent interaction with the end customers and senior leadership within Eaton.  At Eaton, we make what matters work.

In this role, the Lead Mechanical Engineer- Power Electronic Enclosures is responsible for leading the design, development, testing, technical documentation, and production launch of new products for 48V power electronics.

You will work with customers, vendors, other groups within Eaton on conceptualizing Electronics Enclosures and Packaging Designs that will be used in hybrid commercial vehicles. This requires a deep understanding of hardware architectures which are flexible and extensible across a broad scope of products for multiple customers. You will also participate in system-level requirements analysis and cost estimation, design reviews and other team development processes. Success will require keeping abreast of new and emerging technologies, components and materials. The utilization of appropriate CAD tools to design and analyze product functionality and reliability will be critical in facilitating rapid deployment.

In this function you will:

  • Be responsible for the optimal packaging and integration of new and innovative 48V power regulation and converter devices, specifically seeking to identify commonality and transformative development methods
  • Define product requirements and product development strategy in coordination with the power electronics team and customers
  • Interface with customers as the technical expert, providing engineering presentations and proposals
  • Prepare design concepts, detailed drawings, and product specifications, supporting programs from conception to production
  • Create and review APQP documentation (DFMEA, DVP&R, QFD, etc.) for new products in accordance with customer and industry requirements
  • Provide supervision and support to internal and external design resources when appropriate (e.g. other engineers or external test laboratories)
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative working relationship with key customers and suppliers
  • Successfully lead internal coworkers, external contractors, and other resources that may be co-located or at remote locations, including internationally

Qualifications

Basic (Required) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Physics from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in new product development of power electronics / converter enclosure design and packaging 
  • Experience with relevant CAD tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, NX, or CATIA
  • Must be able to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future
  • Relocation is available to applicants open to moving to Southfield, MI. Otherwise, applicants will need to currently reside within a 50 mile radius of one of the mentioned sites to be considered. Relocation to Tualatin, OR, Galesburg MI, or Marshall, MI is not available.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in new product development (NPD) of enclosure design and packaging for  power electronics and printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA)
  • High level understanding of electronics packaging and mounting issues
  • Well versed in the advanced product quality planning (APQP) framework
  • Experience creating and executing design validation test plans
  • Experience with die cast design methods and manufacturing processes
  • Proficient in structured problem-solving techniques (e.g. 8D, Shainin, etc.)
  • Experience with mechanical design analysis using Solid Works Simulation, ANSYS, etc.
  • Know-how on signal integrity and protection methods (EMC/EMI)
  • Experience using DFSS and DFx practices: Manufacturing, Test, Repair, Quality, etc.
